About time

People know they need to exercise and it is reflected in the fact that billions of dollars are spent each year on gym memberships, exercise machines and even wellness programs for employees, yet it is also a well-known fact that most people still don’t use them to exercise because they don’t have time to exercise.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation commissioned an online survey released Tuesday (Nov. 29, 2011) that suggests most Canadians know heart disease and stroke can be fought by making healthy choices, yet almost half of the survey respondents said they don’t have enough time to be active or eat healthier meals.
 
Nearly half of respondents used time as an excuse for being unhealthy: 44% of respondents said they had no time for regular physical activity and almost a third (31%) said the time they would like to spend being active they instead spend commuting.
 
In an average 24 hour day, people need 8 hours for work, 8 hours for sleep, leaving 8 hours for commuting to and from work, meal preparation, eating, spending time with family and all the other things that go into managing life today.  Squeezing in valuable time to exercise, in most cases, just isn’t possible.
